Film Review of Sex and the City: The MovieCarrie, Charlotte, Miranda, Samantha and New York City are Back!
Sex and the City: The Movie sees the reunion of Carrie Bradshaw, Charlotte York Goldenblatt, Miranda Hobbes, Samantha Jones and New York City.
For hard core Sex and the City fans, the end of the sixth season of the popular HBO series brought with it excitement, and a little sadness. The last episode saw all loose ends tied up and Carrie Bradshaw finally reunited with Mr Big. But viewers were left wondering, after such a tumultuous relationship, did Carrie and Mr Big manage to live happily ever after? Sex and the City: The Movie is a comedy romance based on the TV show, and it picks up where the series left off. Summary of Sex and the City: The MovieIn the beginning of the film, all four leading female characters are settled in their current relationships. Charlotte is married to Harry, Miranda to Steve, Samantha is living with Smith, and Carrie and Mr Big are blissfully happy. But all of this is set to change as the movie develops and treats viewers to a wedding, betrayal, a break up, a vacation to Mexico, and the arrival of a new baby. Sex and the City: The Movie contains many of the ingredients one might expect from the TV series, including fashion, shoes, style, glamour, men, relationship issues, and a sprinkling of heartbreaking as well as heart warming moments. The film was clearly made with the fans in mind, resembling a long feature length television episode rather than a movie. Characters in the Film Sex and the City: The MovieSarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon and Kim Cattrall reprise their characters as Carrie Bradshaw, Charlotte York Goldenblatt, Miranda Hobbes and Samantha Jones seemingly effortlessly, almost as if they never stepped out of their Manolo Blahniks four years earlier. Other familiar characters also lend themselves to the film, including Mr Big, Steve Brady, Harry Goldenblatt, Smith Jerrod, Anthony Marentino, Magda and Stanford Blatch. There is one more character that deserves a mention. New York City. New York is the backdrop for many of the scenes in the movie, and has often been affectionately described as ‘the fifth character of the show’. Life for Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda and SamanthaLife for the women in the film is slightly different to how it was in the series. The television show became renowned for its frank and candid approach to sexual topics, of which there is not much in this movie. The characters are essentially the same, but they are all a little older, more mature, and facing life in their forties. There is no dating, little flirting, not much partying, the pace of life has slowed down and no one is quite as free as they once were. Although it manages to stand alone on its own as a movie, it is possible that people who are unfamiliar with the characters and the TV series will not find this film enjoyable. (But it is hard to see why people who didn’t see the TV show would be interested in watching the movie in the first place.) Sex and the City: The Movie is unlikely to have people gripped with suspense due to its simple storyline, but it does throw in some comedy, a little romance, a bit of drama, and is quite dark in places. Avid Sex and the City fans should enjoy this reunion. A Sex and the City movie sequel is scheduled for release in May 2010.
