Clever lyrics, upbeat songs, and stunning performances combine to make the music from "Hairspray" a success.
New Line Records announced on December 6, 2007 that the film remake of Hairspray received a Grammy nomination for Best Soundtrack Recording and was just certified Platinum by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) for selling more than 1 million copies in the United States. The 50th Annual Grammy Awards will be presented on February 10, 2008 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.
In addition, New Line Records released a limited run, two-disc deluxe collector’s edition of the Hairspray soundtrack that went on sale in November 2007. Hairspray debuted in movie theaters nationwide on July 20, and is now available on DVD, HD-DVD and Blu-Ray from New Line Home Entertainment.
Produced by Marc Shaiman with music by Shaiman and lyrics by Scott Wittman and Shaiman, the soundtrack spent 9 consecutive weeks in the top 10 of the Billboard Top 200 chart after its July 10, 2007 release. The album includes three original numbers created specifically for the new film version of the Broadway musical: “New Girl in Town,” “Come So Far,” and “Ladies Choice.”
Other featured songs on the soundtrack include: “Good Morning Baltimore,” “Welcome to the ‘60s,” “Nicest Kids in Town,” and “You Can’t Stop the Beat.” Cast members Nikki Blonsky, John Travolta, Queen Latifah, Michelle Pfeiffer, Zac Efron, Amanda Bynes, Brittany Snow, Elijah Kelley, and others perform the songs.
Sixteen years after the release of the original John Waters romantic comedy film, the Hairspray remake – this time directed by Adam Shankman – brings the cult classic about star-struck teenagers on a local Baltimore, Maryland, dance show back to the silver screen for a whole new generation of fans. Set in the 1960s and starring John Travolta as the insecurely obese mother of confident teenager Tracy Turnblad (Nikki Blonsky), the film follows the girl’s efforts to become a professional dancer on the wildly popular “Corny Collins Show.” Filled with humor, messages of tolerance, and mild sexual innuendo, the new screenplay was written by Leslie Dixon (Freaky Friday, Outrageous Fortune).
“The enormous success of the Hairspray soundtrack is due to the brilliant team of its producers and songwriters March Shaiman and Scott Wittman,” according to Jason Linn, New Line Executive Vice President of Music who oversees New Line Records. “Its Platinum status and Grammy nomination mark two ‘firsts’ for New Line Records.”
