Jason Ritter and Jess Weixler star as Peter and Vandy, two New Yorkers who meet and fall in love, but their story is not all flowers and candy.
The story of Peter and Vandy is laid out like pieces of a puzzle. There is no order to the scenes. The audience is introduced to the two characters, then their lives are shown in bits and pieces. The scenes show them in various everyday situations; however these segments of their lives are disconnected. The everyday situations that are shown are slices of their lives. Actually, their slices of all of our lives. Whether we’re eating, meeting friends, attending a wedding, or whatever, these average, everyday events are bits of the puzzle of the lives of Peter and Vandy. Fitting Together the Pieces of the PuzzleThe characters themselves are entertaining and hold a lot of interest for the audience, however the pieces of the puzzle are what makes this a unique film. The audience sees them meeting, ordering take-out food, and going through their lives. As the pieces pile up, audiences will undoubtedly wonder if these two end up together or not. Frankly, it could go either way. They love each other yet they fight. They get together then they split. What will the ending reveal about their future? The film also inspires audiences to think back on their own lives. Looking at the lives of these two characters in a disjointed way is, strangely enough, the perfect way to analyze their relationship. The scenes are not A, B, C, and D. The movie does not start at the beginning, go through their relationship and end at the ending. It takes detours to reveal the components of their relationship. Peter and Vandy – The Moments of Their LivesSometimes the audience will most likely think that the couple ends up together and sometimes they will figure that they couldn’t possibly end up together. But that is like most relationships. There are pieces of our lives that taken by themselves, might give onlookers a different perspective, but when the entire puzzle is put together, that perspective could be different. The story of Peter and Vandy is no different than any other movie about a relationship except for the way the filmmakers take the audience through their lives. Taken individually, the moments of their lives are just that – moments of their lives. But the whole picture is a different story, and audiences do not get the whole picture until the final scene. This is an artsy film in that it’s not conventional in the storytelling. While many might find it slow and the disconnection between scenes unnerving, others will find its appeal is charming. This film runs 95 minutes.
