The Proposal - DVD ReviewSandra Bullock Lights up the Screen with Ryan Reynolds in Comedy
Although the premise of a fake marriage to avoid deportation has been done many times, this story is still fun and filled with humor.
Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds star in this romantic comedy about a couple getting married to deter the deportation of a non-resident. The story has been done before but what happens between beginning and the end is what makes this a cute and fun film. The Proposal is About a Marriage of Convenience to Avoid DeportationMargaret Tate (Sandra Bullock), a high-powered New York editor, is about to be deported to her home country of Canada. To stop this from happening, she blackmails her assistant Andrew Paxton (Ryan Reynolds) into marrying her. Wanting to raise his stature in the publishing business, he agrees as long as she makes him an editor. So the two both have something at stake in this business arrangement, otherwise referred to as a marriage. Margaret gets to keep her job and Andrew gets to finally be an editor instead of an editor’s assistant. When the immigration official calls them on their plans and informs them that a fake marriage is a federal offence, they do not back down. Instead, the two take off for Sitka, Alaska, Andrew’s home and where his grandmother (Betty White) is about to celebrate her 90th birthday. This little weekend is a chance for them to get to know each other better (so they can impress the immigration officer) and to publicize their engagement, therefore legitimizing it. From New York City to Sitka, AlaskaThis professional New York woman is a fish out of water in Alaska, but sticks with the plan. Margaret will do anything to stay in this country and keep her job. This is where the fun begins. This family embraces her and she learns about life in Alaska, complete with a male exotic dancer, a grandmother who chants and dances to the beat of a different drum, and the man who is about to be her husband. The theme of this movie has been done over and over again. It is the pairing of Bullock and Ryan and their characters that make this a cute story. True, it is predictable, but it is also filled with some very humorous scenes. Playing the parts of Andrew’s parents are Mary Steenburgen and Craig T. Nelson. The DVDBonus features on the DVD include deleted scenes as well as an alternate ending, which is actually funnier and better than the ending in the film. Viewers get to see the options the director had and his final choices which made the feature film. The Proposal is available in three editions: Single Disc Widescreen, 2-Disc DVD and a Digital Copy, and Blu-ray.
