Prepare for hard laughs and a number of gross out moments. The new Kevin Smith film makes you wonder what he took out to bring it down from NC-17 to R.
The film's plot begins when the title characters, Zack and Miri, find that after numerous unpaid bills their utilities have become shut off and they now risk being evicted from their apartment. They come to the realization that the easiest way to make the required payments is to make their own homemade porn. From there they pull in a cast of characters to make the low to no budget film. Romantic Comedy Plot: Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks ChemistryZack and Miri, friends from the first grade, have a strictly platonic relationship but as the film progresses there are hints of stronger feelings between the two. Bare bones this is the same romantic comedy plot we've seen countless times. What makes this film's stronger is the amazing work between Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks. The two do well to play a strong friendship and the awkwardness that grows from the two characters having sex in their film. They are able carry the film comediacly and emotionally, the audience becomes very attached to the two losers from the start and you cannot help but wish to see them succeed. The Auteur Director: Kevin SmithThe film may not be set in Jersey nor does it have Jay and Silent Bob (although Jason Mewes is still cast in the film) it still has the feeling of Kevin Smith behind the helm. Scenes are dialogue heavy and once or twice a character will stray into saying something from his point of view but this doesn't seem to weigh the movie down. Side characters seem to come from left field in mannerisms, but they have the interesting ability to make the film. Justin Long as the gay porn star was pure gold, and even with barely two minutes screen time he's able to steal the show. Even the drunk stumbling in on filming takes the light away from the main characters. Why to See this Movie
Why not to See this Movie
The final thing that is important to stress, the title is cut and dry, it is what the film is about. If you find the title offensive you should not see this film. It heavily depicts what many would consider lewd and almost obscene acts, be prepared when entering the theatre. But, if you believe there's nothing that can offend, shock or disgust you by all means see the film. It's always nice to be surprised.
